Position Title: K-12 Special Education Teacher

​

The Silverton School is a small public school located in Silverton, Colorado, in the heart of the San Juan mountain range. The school has approximately 75 students in grades K-12 and is housed in an historic 3 story red brick building.  Our school is unique in its very setting and its high emphasis on individualized instruction.  Our goal is to meet the individual learning needs of every student through curriculum that is both engaging and academically challenging.  We work to develop confident, competent students who consistently strive for excellence.

Basic Function:

We are seeking a passionate and qualified Special Education Teacher to join our team and contribute to the academic success of our K-12 students with diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will be someone who wants to live in a small, rural mountain community and who has experience working with students with disabilities.  We are looking for a person with excellent communication skills who has the ability to work with a diverse student population and who has a commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Managing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Develop and implement effective, personalized IEPs for students with special needs, ensuring that goals and objectives align with their unique learning requirements and coordinating implementation with the classroom teachers.

  • Implementing Instructional Strategies: Employ a variety of evidence-based instructional strategies to accommodate different learning styles, adapting curriculum content as necessary to meet individual student needs.

​

  • Working Collaboratively: Work closely with general education teachers, school staff, and parents to foster a collaborative approach to student support. Attend and actively participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.

​

  • Monitoring Regular Assessments and Progress: Conduct regular assessments to evaluate student progress and modify instructional strategies accordingly. Provide timely and detailed progress reports to parents, classroom teachers, and school administration.

  • Supporting  Behavioral Needs: Implement behavior management strategies to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment. Collaborate with support staff, counselors, and parents to address behavioral challenges effectively.

​

  • Participating in Professional Development: Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in special education. Participate in ongoing professional development and staff meetings  to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.

​

  • Ensuring Advocacy: Advocate for the rights and needs of students with special needs within the school community. Collaborate with parents and support staff to ensure the provision of necessary resources and accommodations.

​

  • Ensuring  a Safe, Positive, and Inclusive Environment:  Create a space for all students, staff, parents, and visitors that contributes to the well being and success of the overall School Culture.  

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related field.

  • Valid Colorado teaching license with Special Education endorsement, or the ability to qualify for a license.

  • Previous experience working with students with diverse learning needs.

  • Strong knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles.

  • Commitment to the Expeditionary Learning model and School character traits

Terms:

  • Position starts August 12, 2024 and runs through the 2024-2025 school year.

  • The full time salary for the full 2024-2025 school year is  based on the District salary schedule.

  • Benefits include district health and dental insurance and a $5000 moving stipend
