Silverton School Booster Club
WHAT THE CLUB DOES:
The Silverton School Booster Club is a fundraising organization dedicated to raising money for Silverton School activities. We provide financial support for interscholastic and intramural athletics, academic clubs and teams, field trips, Expeditionary Learning activities, equipment, and extra-curricular school activities. We also work to enhance and cultivate school spirit and support our school’s Expeditionary Learning identity.
MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the Silverton School Booster Club is to provide financial support for activities and investments that make our school environment interesting, rewarding and stimulating for students, faculty and families.
HISTORY The Silverton School Booster Club was founded in October, 2007. A group of committed parents worried that too much responsibility for special project fundraising was falling on the shoulders of teachers and coaches. So many different classrooms, clubs and teams needed to raise money in the community that we worried about wearing out donors with too many individual requests. We worried that great teachers might get “burned-out” by having to fundraise for their activities, and that great ideas for student activities might not happen due to insufficient funds. The Silverton Booster Club hopes to ‘centralize’ this fundraising process, involve more parents, enhance creativity in fundraising, and act as a foundation to make dreams come true at our school.
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SCHOOL: The Booster Club is not a separate organization from the Silverton School District. Rather, it is a parent-driven program of the School District. The School District acts as our fiscal sponsor, and all fundraising proceeds are given to the District to be tracked as part of the Student Activity Fund. The Superintendent is invited to attend all meetings and requests for funding will not be granted without the Superintendent’s final approval. School Board members are also encouraged to participate. The school district tracks our income and expenses for this program separately from other line items in its budget and financial statements. The Booster Club will receive a financial report monthly from the Business Manager for the purposes of monitoring our account.
FUNDRAISING: We recognize that there are many different styles of successful fundraising. What matters most is having a passionate ‘captain’ and great volunteers at the helm who believe it can succeed. We encourage members to suggest fundraising ideas that they are excited to champion. Fundraisers in 2008 may include product sales (Butter Braids, team duffle bags, tulip and daffodil bulbs, magazines, re-usable shopping bags, wrapping paper, sweatshirts), a 4th of July Carnival, and fundraiser dinners.
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES: We hope 100% of school families, and at least 25 members of the community and businesses at-large will become Booster Members. Annual dues will be $20/year for a parent/faculty membership, $30/year for a family (up to six relatives) and $30 for a Business and Alumni membership. Donations of any size are gladly accepted.
HOW FUNDS WILL BE USED: The Booster Club will welcome applications to support great student and faculty ideas and projects, especially those that address the priorities of the School District and enhance the character traits of the school as a whole. It will be our goal to distribute funds evenly among all age groups based on the number of children who will benefit. It will not be easy to make these decisions, because there will inevitably be more great projects than we have funds to support. But hey, better than no Booster club at all, right?
WHO SHOULD APPLY? The Booster Club gives preference to student-sponosred applications for funding, but will also accept requests from teachers, administrators, coaches and other school staff /volunteers. Every effort will be made to fund activities for all age groups in the school equally. In order to be considered, the project, program or activity must meet the following requirements:
a) It must not violate any school policy, rule or compromise any school character trait.
b) It must be consistent with the overall mission of the school.
c) It must not discriminate against any eligible student based on race, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
Applications will be reviewed by the Booster Club committee of parents, as well as the Superintendent for final approval. Our application form is available from the School Business Office or Booster Club Members.
MONTHLY MEETINGS The Silverton School Booster Club usually meets on the first Friday of the month at 8:15 am. We try to make meetings fun and casual by meeting at a coffee shop or home. We also meet occasionally at the school. All parents are welcome to attend any meeting anytime. We have decided to try an informal leadership approach, without elected officers. It is a bit of an experiment, but we feel that it will keep the responsibilities from resting too heavily on any one set of shoulders. At each meeting, members will designate a coordinator for the next meeting and captains for any specific fundraisers planned. We will maintain an annual calendar of fundraisers we are planning. Each parent will be responsible for the tasks they have agreed to in between meetings. Many hands make light work!
